Craft Room

The archive is the reason the studio exists. Everything else — briefs, digests, memos — is a view into shelves that do not forget. We occupy #04-02 at 33 Pagoda Street: a single floor of reading tables, locked cabinets, and terminals that talk only to our index.

Intake begins when a document enters public record. We download the authenticated PDF, hash it, rename it to our convention, and log the agency timestamp. If the agency reissues the file, we store both versions and link them. Search engines may show the latest only; we keep the trail.

Reading tables face the windows because daylight reduces error on long proofs. Consultants and counsel sit here during appointed visits. We do not offer a self-service portal — access is human because the questions are human: "What did we know on 14 March?" is not answered by a keyword box alone.

Cabinet rows follow section order. Within each row, folders sort by date, then entity. Margin tabs use the navy divider colour you see on the site. Physical packets mirror digital ones; when a client requests an Archive Pull, both shelves are checked.

Established in 2018, the studio grew from two desks to six without opening a second site. We cap intake deliberately — if the index falls behind, we pause new client onboarding until the ledger catches up. Quality of sequence beats quantity of accounts.

Scene: litigation discovery asks for every public notice concerning a subsidiary across three years. Problem: agency sites purge or reorder. Method: we rebuild from hashed copies. Receive: a dated bundle with cover sheet listing sources and revision history.

We are not a library open to the public. Visits are scheduled through Write Us. Bring identification and a letter describing the scope of what you need to read. Photography of documents is restricted; note-taking is encouraged.

Pagoda Street puts us between Maxwell Food Centre and the Chinatown exchange district — convenient for clients who want to read in the morning and attend a briefing nearby at lunch. The address appears on every edition footer; the map on this page is approximate to the block, not to individual units.

Retention follows written agreements. Default retention is seven years for indexed PDFs unless law requires longer. After retention expires, hashes remain even if files are purged — so we can still prove what we held on a given date.

If the archive were a person, it would be the colleague who remembers page numbers. Our job is to be that colleague for organisations that cannot spare a full-time filing team.
